Are you struggling to get a plan of attack to implement your volleyball unit? 30 years ago I was right there with you. I felt like I spent more time trying to get organized and planning how to implement a unit that I was distracted from the important part of teaching the skills and knowledge needed to learn the game of volleyball. You know the song, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", well that should be kids just wanna have fun! It has taken me several, well lots of years to come up with a plan that students absolutely love. As we all know when kids are happy and engaged the results are amazing!
There is so much to think about when teaching volleyball. If you break it down and start small you will give the students the power to feel successful and the thirst to want more. An example of a daily outline to follow could include:
Fitness Focus -Warm Up Activity - Pick a fitness skill of the day. If our warm up was going to be push up tag then our focus is upper body strength.
Vocab of the Day- Pick 1-5 vocab words that go with your unit or skill of the day. Hang the words on the wall, projector, visible in your outline, in your Google Classrooms. The more you talk the talk of the game the more the kids will get proficient at that vocab.
Skill Focus Activity- If our skill of the day is setting then show a skill focus card with steps to good setting and demo the skill.
Lead Up Activity- Tons to choose from! Who doesn't love new ideas!
Need some ideas for fun and engaging lead up games and drills. Check out this Volleyball Lead Up Games & Activities.
Just for Fun Enrichment- Videos, Worksheets, Pintables offer extra instruction and resources for students who want to learn more on their own or for those students who are virtual learners doing PE @ Home.
Assessment- Gotta keep those administrators happy with an organized assessment system. No problem, try using a checklist, thumbs up or thumbs down assessment and get students feedback with exit tickets.
Depending upon the amount of time you see your students you may not have time for all of these categories in one day. Kids thrive on consistency. They almost know what you are going to to say next. Use a whiteboard, chalkboard or online communication tool to show the kids your outline of the day. They love knowing what the work schedule or agenda is for the day. This will also help your behavior kids as a count down board and help ease anxiety of what is next, when will we get to a game, what are we doing today questions.
