How I Plan a Month of PE Lessons in 30 Minutes

Have you ever sat down on a Sunday evening with a blank lesson plan book and wondered...

"What am I teaching this week?"

I've been there.

Early in my teaching career, I spent hours searching for activities, digging through old lesson plans, and trying to remember what I taught last year. By the time Monday arrived, I was exhausted before the week even began.

Then I made one simple change that completely transformed my planning.

Instead of planning one lesson at a time, I started planning an entire month at once.

That one habit saved me countless hours and made every week feel more organized.

Here's the simple system I still use today:

Week 1: Introduce the Skill

Teach the fundamentals with demonstrations, simple activities, and plenty of practice.

Week 2: Build Confidence

Use stations, partner work, and fun challenges to increase repetition.

Week 3: Apply the Skill

Students use what they've learned in small-sided games and cooperative activities.

Week 4: Assess and Celebrate

Finish the unit with games, skill assessments, and opportunities for students to reflect on their progress.

Because I already know where the month is headed, I spend less time planning and more time teaching.

Even better, my students benefit from lessons that build naturally from one week to the next.

Imagine Starting Every Monday Already Prepared

What if every lesson already included:

✔ Learning targets

✔ Skill progressions

✔ Equipment lists

✔ "I Can" statements

✔ National Standards alignment

✔ Assessments

✔ Printable station cards

✔ Teacher directions

That means no more scrambling for ideas the night before class.

Instead, you can focus on what matters most—helping students stay active, learn new skills, and enjoy physical education.
