The first few weeks of school are some of the most important days of the entire year in Elementary PE. They're your opportunity to build relationships, establish routines, teach expectations, and create a positive classroom culture that will last all year long.
Whether you're a first-year teacher or a veteran, a little planning now can make every PE class run more smoothly. Here are my favorite tips to help you start the school year with confidence.
1. Focus on Relationships Before Skills
Students are much more willing to participate when they feel welcomed and included. Spend the first few classes learning names, encouraging teamwork, and helping students get to know one another.
Simple community-building activities like Four Corners, Human Bingo, Find Someone Who, and Would You Rather? get students moving while making new friends.

2. Teach Expectations Through Games
Instead of spending an entire class talking about rules, let students practice expectations while they're moving.
Review topics such as:
- Walking safely in the gym
- Personal space
- Equipment safety
- Listening for stop signals
- Encouraging classmates
- Good sportsmanship
Students remember expectations much better when they experience them during fun activities.
3. Create a Consistent Warm-Up Routine
One of the biggest time-savers in PE is having a warm-up routine students recognize every day.
When students know exactly what to expect, transitions are quicker and you spend less time explaining directions.
That's why I love using my Daily 5 Warm-Ups.
Each activity combines movement with thinking by having students answer fun Yes or No questions about:
- Fitness
- Sports
- Movement skills
- Olympic trivia
- General PE knowledge
Students stay active while reviewing important concepts, and you'll get quick informal assessments without adding extra work to your day.
Even better—it's 44 weeks of print-and-go warm-ups. Simply copy, project, and teach.
4. Keep Activities Simple
The best first-week lessons aren't the most complicated—they're the easiest to understand.
Choose activities with:
- Simple directions
- Minimal equipment
- Quick setup
- Lots of movement
- High participation
Simple games help students build confidence while learning your class routines.
5. Build Classroom Community Every Day
A strong PE program is about more than teaching skills. It's also about helping students learn to encourage one another, work together, and celebrate everyone's success.
Take a few minutes each class to ask students:
- Who encouraged a classmate today?
- What was something new you learned?
- What made today's class fun?
Those small conversations create a welcoming environment where students want to participate.
6. Save Yourself Planning Time
The beginning of the school year is busy enough without creating every lesson from scratch.
Having ready-to-use resources allows you to spend more time teaching and less time planning.
